T-Mobile USA is reportedly buying Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) of 10 MHz from U.S. Cellular. The deal has been closed at US$308 million.
A total of 29 markets incorporating 32 million people in the Mississippi Valley region would be covered by the mobile wireless spectrum. This will make room for an increasing roll-out of LTE network coverage of T-Mobile to new markets, thereby expanding the current LTE bandwidth in the significant Mississippi Valley region.
So far as the present market scenario is concerned, T-Mobile’s President and CEO, John Legere, compares spectrum to gold and adds that it is an exclusive opportunity for MetroPCS and T-Mobile customers to obtain and make use of valuable AWS spectrum in major markets. The deal of US$308 million expands T-Mobile’s capacity and network, facilitating a wider roll-out of 4G LTE along with a more reliable and faster 4G experience to customers, while at the same time boosting competition amidst the mobile wireless marketplace.
The agreement anticipates approval from the Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), in addition to other routine closing formalities. Once the regulatory approval is obtained, the deal would expectedly close by 2013 fourth quarter.
